As the subject of this thread is still ESSEX, it is a good question to ask. There is no known link between the Essex and Bedfordshire families and if there is any, it would have been prior to the 16th century, i.e. before most paper records. This is therefore one of the questions I would like to answer with the DNA project, if I can get enough participants.
The family arms are similar between the two families, but the Bedfordshire one had theirs only from the middle of the 17th century, at least a century after the Essex families (which are well documented in the various Essex Visitations). It is likely that the Bedfordshire family simply assumed a connection to get access to their arms. Arms issued during the Commonwealth period and the pedigrees they were based on, are known to be error prone.
Both families certainly had their recusants, although for the Essex families these were largely recorded in the early 17th century (but up to the 1670s). They were mostly traditionally catholic, although there was a staunch protestant arm. The occurrences in Bedfordshire were in the 1680s and I am wondering whether these were as much for protestant non-conformism, e.g. for following John Bunyan, as for catholicism.
I haven't seen any suggestion that the Enfield Whitebreads came from Essex, although of course it is certainly possible. There were many Whitebreads in London itself back into the 16th century, and it is also possible that they came from the Whitebread strongholds of Sussex, Kent or Wiltshire. Again, DNA might be able to point us in the right direction.
