According to the 1881 census, Edward Whitebread was born in Loughborough in 1827. The sons were Edward, William and Thomas - all family names used in my family, but then again all common names. His son William married in Nottingham in 1888. I suspect the sporadic occurence in censuses is due to mispelling. What evidence do you have that they were connected to Toddington, and do you know where they originated from before that?
