An interesting theory. I note that the place of marriage (Morpeth) is on the main road from England to Scotland. The bride's name (Jane Allen) is quite common in that area and in Scotland.

The Northumberland records office would have a copy of the parish register, and be able to say if any additional information was given at the time of marriage. This might tell us the parish where the bride/groom normally lived (though this is not always reliable), and who the witnesses were - they might have been relatives.

Have you any idea what happened to Edward's brother, Joseph? He was born 1766. I have found no record of him in Enfield after his baptism, although I admit I have not checked before 1774 (he could have died as a child).
