Rick, can you help me? My ancestor was Mary White, the wife of Joseph Moultrie. Joseph Moultrie died in 1804 in possession of property in the Chesterfield District of SC. As you know, the Yankees burned the Chesterfield Courthouse. There was a dispute over the rightful ownership of the property, and a petition was filed in the Equity Court. These records which were kept in Darlington survived the burning, and the original book is now in the possession of the Darlington Historical Society. This petition was filed in 1809 and gave the date of death of Joseph Moultrie as 1804. Mary is not mentioned in the document, so she may have preceded him in death. A frail hand-written document dictated by their grandson gives Mary White as his grandmother. Mary and Joseph's granddaughter, Ailie Cook Sellers, was born in 1788 per her grave marker in Wilcox County, AL. The Sellers left the Chesterfield District in 1823 for Anson County and left Anson settling in Cambridge, Dallas County, AL, in 1829. In 1830, they permanently located in Wilcox County, AL. All of this is contained in their son's obituary of 1852. So, I have good documentation as far back as Mary White. Since her granddaughter was born in 1788, a likely date for Mary's birth would be around 1748. I crave to know who Mary's parents were! Mary and Joseph had the following children and in-laws mentioned in the equity petition: Ruth m. Daniel Cook, Luvicey m. John McNeill, Margaret m. Neill McNeill, and Sarah m. Nedom/Wedom Walker of GA. The petition was filed by a son James Moultrie of Eatonton (Putnam County), GA. Sarah Walker had died and her three children are given: Nancy m. David Cook, Polly m. Samuel Howard, and Peter Walker. There may have been other children of Mary and Joseph Moultrie who were not in contention over the property.

In case it might help someone else, I will post the children of Daniel and Ruth Moultrie Cook: Ailie Cook m. Samuel Sellers, Joseph Moultrie Cook m. Martha (Patsy) Lindsey, James Cook d. unmarried, Daniel Cook m. Martha Warren Norwood and later Caroline McMillan (Murphy), Margaret Cook m. Holden Barrett, Mary (Malsie) Cook m. William Blount Alsobrook, John Cook m. Ann Witty, Tillitha Cook m. James Lindsey, William Ervin Cook m. unknown, Levisa Cook m. Isaac Futrell, and Abram Mastin Cook m. Eliza Pressley (Hazelette). After Daniel Cook's death, Ruth Moultrie Cook migrated to KY, TN, and back to KY where she is buried. Some of her children married in SC, and others married in KY.

Rick, I hope you have an idea who the parents of Mary White were.

Thank you, Joan Sellers Johnson
