Charles White of Monroe Co. TN, 1890
Maryville Times, (Blount Co. TN) Wednesday, April 30, 1890:
"Blood And Vengeance---Charles White, of Monroe County, passed through here Monday night with his eleven months old child, fleeing from an enraged wife and her father’s family. Mr. White and Miss Cook were married about two years since at the home of her father in Monroe County. To them was born one child, less than a year since. About three months ago they separated, but we know nothing of the causes for this seperation. Mr. White and a stranger whose name we do not know went to the home of J.M. Cook, armed and while there fired several shots at Mrs. White and probably her mother, inflicting a wound on the hand of Mrs. White. White took the child and left. Mr. Cook not being at home, the men must have received pretty strong resistance from the wife and her mother, to have given any room at all for a resort to arms by men to two women. White came to Maryville, hired a rig to drive him near Knoxville. Mr. Cook came here Tuesday morning in pursuit of White. He offers fifty dollars reward for the capture of White and the child. Cook gives evidence of being a determined man. It is said by our informant that White has been regarded as a peaceable, hard working man, without bad habits, and also that the Cook family is very respectable family. Altogether it seems to be a sad case, one that is difficult to see the results."
