Greetings! I know that I have corresponded with some of you all about Joseph White. At that time we were unable to find a connection between him and the Denson family I've been pursuing. However, I have recently learned that he may in fact be some connection if not an ancestor. I know there is some "established" information on this family, but I am beginning to find information in the primary records which contradicts some of it. I just hope I haven't confused all the families and made them into one. Of course, my main problem is determing who all the Whites are in Anson County. Was there only one Joseph in each generation or are they different families, etc. From what I can tell the Joseph White who died at 112 in Anson County (Raleigh Register and North Carolina State Gazette, 2/11/1808: "Died at his seat in Anson County, Mr. Joseph White at the extreme age of 112 years." [ Neal, Abstracts of Vital Records from Raleigh, NC newspapers, 1799-1819]) was probably identical with the Joseph White, Sr. who left a will dated 25 July 1805 and proved April 1808. In that will he only named his wife, Averilla. In February 1805 Joseph White, Jr. wrote his will and named wife, Sarah, and children: George John Henry Reuben Agnes Harrell wife of James Harrell Jemima Shepherd wife of Thomas Shepherd Isaiah Zachariah Joel His will was proved in July 1807 and in that month his heirs sold negroes belonging to the estate to John White. On 12 June 1816 Avarilla White, widow of Joseph White, Sr., sold land to her grandson, Zachariah White. My questions: Am I correct in saying that the 1808 obituary was for Joseph White who left will and named wife Avarilla? Was the Zachariah White named as Avarilla's grandson the same man named as a son of Joseph White, Jr. in his will? Was Joseph White, Jr. the same person who had wife Margaret in the 1742s? Was it Joseph White, Sr. or Joseph White, Jr. who was granted land in Balden County in 1746? Which Joseph White sold land to James Denson in 1759? We think this may have been Jemima's dower: 7 November 1759 Joseph White, Sr. to James Denson, Jr. for L20 land on south side of Pee Dee below Wagon Ford Road. Witnesses were Shadrach Denson (James' brother) and Zachariah Phillips. In 1757 Will of John Leeth, which Joseph White did he mean when Mary White was called daughter of Joseph White? Who was the William White who died in Anson County in 1767? Jemima White served as administratrix. NFI I am still trying to determine if the Jemima Shepherd was identical to Jemima who was widow of James Denson and later married William Bogan. Per Leonardo Andrea she was nee' White and the Whites and Densons were closely associated from early settlement. The deed whereby Joseph White sold land to Jemima Denson's husband, James, actually sounds like it may have been her dower. At any rate, I am still working on all of this and trying to make sense out of it! It's slowly falling into place, but I should like to know what you can contribute. Many thanks for anything you might be able to offer. Regards, John Smallwood Notify Administrator about this message?
