Okay, here's what I do know. I have a g.g.g.grandfather Edward Raphael Fanuef who moved from Canada to California in the mid 1880's. He was a blacksmith. In the 1870 Monterey County Directory, Fanuef is a partner in a shop with C.R. (Charles Rose) Whitcher. Charles Rose was married to "Anne" or "Annie" who we think was born in Maine about 1829. One of their sons, Charles Rose Jr. was born in Canada, the other Frank B. was born in Mass. There is a record that Charles Rose divorced his wife "Anne F. Whitcher" in 1869. In the 1875 Monterey County Directory, Whitcher and Fanuef are no longer partners. C.R. Whitcher JR has a daughter they name "Annie."
SO here's the question: Is it possible that the "F" in Anne F. Whitcher stands for Fanuef, and Edward came to California to work with his brother-in-law C.R. Whitcher in the blacksmith shop???? Can anyone shed any light on Anne or Annie or on Charles Rose???????? Thank you so very much - - we've been looking for Edward's parents for at least two generations of time!!!!!
