My father died last year and I suppose that has been the catalyst for making me think about relatives I know are out there. Why didn't I ask when I had the chance?
He was born Frederick Samuel Edward in the Old Kent Road (London) in 1924, an only child to Frederick William Whitcher and Margaret Adair Forrest. Frederick (the elder) was born 26 July 1894 in the registration district of St. Olave Southwark. His father was Edward Whitcher who had married Emily Fairbairn in 1884. I know that my grandfather had two sisters; Alice Frances and another who I think was called Emily. He also had a brother who I only ever heard mentioned as Steve. I think my great grandfather had other siblings, one who seems to have been known as old Aunt Alice.
All the family I've mentioned lived in London. My parents moved out to Hampshire before I was born. I do remember my father saying that he thought the family originally came from the Andover area (gypsies were definitely mentioned).
I hope these ramblings ring a bell somewhere.
