Yes I know about the Whitbread you are
looking for. My great grandfather was named
William Charles Clark, he was born in Bedfordshire,England June 10,1830,died Oct.14,1921, is buried at Steele Branch Cemetery near Stockdale,Tx. Ellen Alex West who was my grandmother was one of his daughters. He did have several children which
I have record of. The family story goes about
like you stated. My grandmother didn't say
what the occasion was that made him leave one
jump ahead of the sheriff or if she did I can't remember it. I always figured his name
in England was William Charles Whitbread, but I heard from a family member recently who said his name in England was Charles Edward,
so I am going to start searching under this name in the future. That family member whom you may know and are probably kin to is Nancy
Burt, as you live pretty close together. If you don't know her I can probably put you in
touch with her. I can send you a Gedcom file
by e-mail if you'd like.
