I have recently begun researching my Whistler ancestors and saw your message. I noticed some similarities between the Robert R. Whistler that you mentioned and my great, great grandfather. I have several ancestors from Uvalde, Kinney and Val Verde counties in Texas.
I have been told that Robert R. Whistler, born in Illinois and who was a justice of the peace in Texas was my great, great grandfather.
As a young woman, my ancestor, Kate Parker, lived with Robert Whistler and his family. Robert performed her marriage ceremony. I have a copy of her marriage record, that Robert Whister, justice of the peace, signed on September 27, 1883 in precinct no. 6 in Bracketville, Kinney County, Texas.
In addition, I have an 1880 Kinney County, Texas census record, that lists Robert R. Whistler's profession as "stockraising." His age is listed as 38 years. His wife's name on this census is Margaret, age 22 from Arkansas. (Her parents were from Alabama).
Robert and Margaret's children listed on the census:
Esther age 5
Marion age 3
Willie age 6 months
Kate Parker, mentioned above is also listed on this census as a cousin, residing in the Whistler household. Robert and Margaret also had a son, John, not listed on this census.
I don't have any information on when Margaret Whistler died.
I don't have any information on Robert Whister after 1883. You mentioned that your Robert Whistler moved to Del Rio. I have letters written by Robert Whistler's granddaughters that state Robert Whistler's son resided in Del Rio.
In addition to these letters, his granddaughters have passed along family history that our Robert R. Whistler descends from John Whistler, who came to America in 1776 (the grandfather of the artist, James Abbott McNeil Whistler).
I would greatly appreciate any information that you could share. Is this perhaps the same Robert R. Whistler? Thanks, Tammy
