Whisenant/St. Clair County AL

I am a descendant of James W. Whisenant, 1847-1913 Etowah and St Clair County, AL. Looking for his father. James was a mulatto and listed as such in the 1900 and 1910 Census, married Fannie Whisenant and had numerous children: Andrew, Frank, Nellie, and Charles among others. My father nor his siblings know who James' father was. We are thinking maybe William Whisenant or Whisenhunt???? The trail is cold for me because of the possibility that James was a slave and his father could have been slaveowner. Any information would be helpful.
