Jon, I may have found something for you to go on. Looking back at the 1860 census where I found Alzina Smith, I see that Jacob Sr. had a young man living with him, Byron M. Spencer b abt 1843. If Byron was his son then Jacob is the Jacob Spencer married to Betsey Rushmore who died in 1854 when Byron was about 10. That might explain why the other Spencer boys were sent to live with relatives. If this is the correct Jacob Spencer then his father was Caleb Spencer and his mother being Mary Bedell. Betsey Rushmore's mother was Phebe Underhill who was born 1787 making her the correct age for the Phebe Wood you mentioned. Byron left NY and traveled several states before landing in Sonoma County, CA where he was a grocer then land speculator. He was born in Albany County, NY and m Nellie Adams of Maine in Concord, NH. His children Louis R., Harvey W. and Ralph J.
Hope this gives you some leads. Good Luck. Beverly
PS - if you ever find how they were related to the Whipples in my database please let me know - still a mystery on this end
