Johanna Whelan of Cheekpoint, WATERFORD, Ireland
Johanna Whelan married Michael Coffey/Coffee before 1831. They lived at Cheekpoint, a fishing village situated on the banks of Waterford Harbour where the rivers Suir and Barrow meet, just a few miles east of Waterford city. Their daughter Margaret Coffey, born circa 1839, married Edward/Edmund Barry in 1864 and their son Michael was born in Cheekpoint in 1865. All the men and their families were seaman or worked on the river.
Margaret Coffey Barry married seaman Laurence Matson in 1868. Their daughter Christina settled in Liverpool.Her son Michael Barry married Margaret Dempsey in the city of Waterford in 1887.
Whelan relatives were alternatively known as Phelan; one worked for the League of Nations in Geneva in the 1920s.
