Hi,
I'm writing to you because of the same spelling of "Whelan" in your family history as in mine.My mother's mother's mother's (my maternal g grandmother's) maiden name was Whelan.
Per notes by my grandmother, who has been deceased for forty years, her mother's (Clara Louise [Whelan] Hedderly's) great grandfather was Andrew Whelan, he died in Ireland.
Clara's grandfather, John Whelan died in Canada between 1815 & 1820. He was stationed at Kingston, Canada under Wellington. He had (4) sons, Andrew, Peter, Christopher and James - no daughters. All four sons named their oldest sons John, after their father (this must have really been fun at family reunions).
Clara's father's name was Christopher Whelan. She had brothers by the names of Mark and Mike, one lived in the Tacoma, Washington region and the other was in South Dakota, during my mother's childhood, probably 1920's through the 1940's. We've lost track of that side of the family, their descendants may still be living in those areas.
Clara (my g grandmother) married Edwin Powell Hedderly on 10/26/1873 in Minneapolis, Minnesota. They moved from there to Tacoma, Washington and then about 1898 moved to Portland, Oregon, which is where they lived until the end of their lives.Clara Louise (Whelan) Hedderly was born 05/18/1854 in Huntley, Ontario, Canada and died 04/14/1941 in Portland, Oregon.
It would be great if we have a connection. Please let me know what you think.
Thank you, Karen
