I have seen many references to "Rebecca Sayre, b. 1572, d/o Wm & Elizabeth Squire"; but this is doubtful. William Sayre, Rebecca's purported father, predeceased his brother Thomas. The latter left a will in 1581, which included bequests to William's wife Elizabeth and four of their children -- Robert, Thomas, Francis and Alice: "Item I give and bequeathe to Robert Sayre my nephewe V£ whearof I hadd by three bullockes to me solde by the overseers of my brother his laste will by the praisers of the goodes to e delivered LVI£ VIIId. "Item I give and bequeathe to Thomas Sayre my nephewe IIII£ Xs "Item I give and bequeathe to ffrauncis Sayer my nephewe XXs and to Alice Sayer my neece XXs all the saide legacies to be paide & delivered vnto the chilldren abovesaide when they shall come to the age of XIX yeaes." -- Banta, Theodore Melvin, Sayre family: lineage of Thomas Sayre, a founder of Southampton c/o Google Books The latter two children were minors in 1581, and the former not -- which means the four were born prob. ABT 1560 +/- 3-5 years. If a Rebecca were born to William and Elizabeth in 1572, she would likely have been mentioned in the will along with her sister Alice; but no such Rebecca is mentioned. It seems reasonable to me, that Rebecca became a "Sayre" somewhere along the line, through confusion with Thomas Wheeler's mother, Alice Sayer. Notify Administrator about this message?
