Kelly, A cousin of mine, (no relation to the Wheelers) and a good genealogist told me that I needed to spend at least two years camped out at the Washington Co. Va. courthouse and go through everything possible on Wheeler records. Now about Oliver Sr. I have a Wash. Co. Va. Deed in which an Oliver Wheeler and a Catherine Wheeler 1793 deeded a parcel of land to John Irons. Can't ignore her as wife no. 1 of Oliver Wheeler Sr. In Wash. Co. Va. marriage book 1 is a record for the 10, Jan. 1805 marriage of an Oliver Wheeler to a Nancy Crauly. She is wife No. 2. So, that leads me to believe all older children of Oliver Sr. have a different mother. Needs more research. THere are at least three, maybe more Wheelers in Wash. Co. Va.1815 that could be your James Wheelers father. Two possibilities. Stephen Wheeler Jr. would be a good guess. He was born 1787 and had a son about 1811 named Stephen, but there was a 9 year gap from 1811 until 1820 until he had another child, a son. Again this all needs more research, but this is what I have, right or wrong. Of the 4 sons I have listed for Stephen, none are named James. So, your James could be Stephens. Thinking like they did. We know the Wheelers all named their sons the same names, over and over, generation after generation. His wife was 23-33 years old in this time period. Where was she getting her birth control pills? I also believe Thomas Wheeler as you say may also be a good bet. 1830 census Thomas had one son 10-15 and one son 15-20. Either one could be your James. I traced Thomas to Knoxville Tennessee 1850 census, the after that to Casey Co. Ky. . He and his wife are listed by themselves. No children. Your James may be their son. I'm unable to address your thoughts about other given names for Oliver Wheeler Sr. children. THere are several descendents of Oliver who visit this forum frequently who might have it more accurate than I have. It was only recently I learned from one of them that Francis Wheeler's middle name was Marion. Just this. I take the info on hand and go with it, hoping its accurate. But always challenging it.
