Wheeler family Rockingham County, virginia

I am looking for information on my early family.

The farthest back that I have any substatial information is my great grandfather Peter William Wheeler born in Rockingham County, Virginia in September 1838. He was a laboror and a farmer. He is the 4th Corporal listed on the roster of the Bridgewater Grays. The unit was formed in early 1861 and paraded completely uniformed and fully equipped down Main Street in front of the Bridgewater town hall on April 5, 1861 under the command of Captain John S. Brown.

After passage of the Virginia Ordinance of Succession on April 17, 1861, the Bridgewater Grays, along with seven other Rockingham infantry companies and two infantry companies from surrounding counties were organized into the 5th Virginia, and then on June 8 became Company D of the 10th Regiment Virginia Volunteers. Peter was wounded in the leg at Gettysburg on July 3 and spent time as a POW at DeCamp General Hospital in New York from July 17, 1863 until he was paroled on October 22, 1863. He returned to his regiment relegated to light duty with a surgeon's certificate where he stayed until the end of the war. He died on July 17, 1914 in Briery Branch, Virginia.

Peter was the son of James R. and Leanna (Sipe) Wheeler. I have no personal information on James and Leanna except that they were married in Rockingham County, Virginia on February 13, 1828.

I was told years ago that my family migrated to America from Germany. They settled in or around Hanover, Pennsylvania around 1660 or so. I do not know if they lived anywhere else between arriving in America and living Hanover, Pa.

Around 1700, my branch of the family migrated south to Rockingham, Virginia (evidently some of the family stayed in Hanover, Pa). Except for the information about coming from Germany and living in Hanover, Pa, I have no specific information prior to the time of James R. and Leanna Wheeler (early 1800s).

Any and all information that can help me fill in the large gaps of information of my early family is greatly appreciated.

Thank you.
