Heidi,
I don’t know where Lewis was buried, but I do know about his 7 children and quite a bit about his ancestry. His parents were Arthur Wharton, Jr. b: abt 1790 in MD and d: 8/29/1844 in Belmont Co. and Elizabeth Lewis b: 7/5/1791 and d: 8/20/1851 in Belmont Co. Elizabeth’s father was the Rev. John Wesley Lewis. Arthur and Elizabeth had 12 children, Lewis being the 11th. There were 6 boys and 6 girls. They m: in 1812.
Arthur, Jr.’s parents were, of course, Arthur, Sr. and wife Hannah MNU. Arthur, Sr. was b: probably in Somerset or Worcester Co., MD about 1760 or before. He and Hannah had at least 4 children. Towards the end of the century Arthur and family are found traveling west along the tortuous Braddock Trail, past Fort Cumberland and Fort Necessity and went into the Redstone country where he finally settled on 209 acres of rolling and timbered land bordering on the Redstone Creek in Franklin Twp., Fayette Co., PA. He started at once to clear the land and build a log cabin, which was still standing in 1916.
Arthur, Jr., in 1818, sold his Fayette C. land that his father left him, and loaded his family on a house-boat-scow and floated down Redstone Creek to the confluence of the Monongahela and thence onto the Ohio River and then to a new homestead in Belmont Co., OH.
Practically all of the above info came from “The Wharton Sleeve” by Nathan Earl Wharton in 1949 with notes added in 1963 by Robert Wharton Moorhouse.
