Connie, Yes, John Washington Wharton b: abt 1821 in Culpeper Co., VA., d: 1/21/1892 in Elm Grove, WV, is most probably the son of Nelson and his first wife Lillie A. ?, but I have no proof of this. There may be other children as Nelson and Lillie m: 9/26/1816 and John wasn’t born until 1821. John also appears to have had a 1st wife before his Elizabeth. John appears to have married an unknown before 1840 as they had a Henrietta b: abt 1840. He married Elizabeth 2/20/1845. Nelson is claimed to be the son of Zachariah and Sarah Young Wharton. Zachariah had a brother, Samuel. They served in the Rev. War together. We have DNA samples from a descendant of Samuel and one from a descendant of Nelson via supposed son John. The DNA’s don’t match. This means that either Nelson is not the son of Zachariah, Zachariah and Samuel aren’t brothers, John is not the son of Nelson or our male who claims to descend from Nelson via John, doesn’t. The early living closeness of Beverly, James Garnett and Meredith Wharton with Nelson, and the fact that Nelson named a son James Garnett makes me believe that Nelson is not a son of Zachariah.
