Dave:
I have considerable documentation that Zachariah and Samuel were brothers. They went into the Rev. War together and after Samuel was wounded by a cannonball Zach stayed with him until he was able to travel. When they came home that came to Bath County, Va. (currently Berkley Springs, WV) and Zach's family remained there until his death. I have the pension records for Zach as well as the pension records for Samuel from the Rev. War. Samuel went back to Orange Co. Va. where he eventually died. Zach's children (especially NELSON) migrated west to the Wheeling, WV area and some of Nelson's children stayed and some moved to Missouri. Nelson's wife "Elizabeth" died here and her grave is no more that a quarter of a mile from where I currently live. I also have reason to believe that Nelson is also buried beside her but there is no grave stone. The records just indicate "Wharton 1877." I truly believe that my GGGrandfather was John W. Wharton, first born of Nelson. Even though he is not listed in any of the posted record of children the 1840 Va. Census lists nine males in the Nelson Wharton family. I have them as:
1 male -Age 50/under 60.......NELSON
2 males-Age 15/under 20 JOHN b. abt 1821 was age 19
BAYLESS b. " 1824 " " 16
1 male -Age 10/under 15 POWEL b. " 1828 " " 12
3 males-Age 5/under 10
PRESLEY b. " 1831 " " 9
GIBSON b. " 1833 " " 7
SILAS b. " 1835 " " 5
2 males-Age under 5
CHARLES b. " 1837 " " 3
JAMES b. " 1840 " " Baby
In all the local records in this area "JOHN W." either lives near or is associated with Nelson and John's siblings. In one census CHARLES (John's brother) was living with John and Charles is listed as being insane. I have most of the marriage records and wife's of Nelson's children because they were living and working in Wheeling as farmers. When being married some of them moved to Missouri.
Jim
