Susannah Wharton/ Ira Hoskins

It most likely turns out that Susannah Wharton, b: abt 1804, who m: Ira Hoskins, was the granddaughter of Robert and Sarah Farley Wharton. She, along with other siblings, including Margaret b: abt 1812 (who m: Arthur Crawford) and brothers Isaac b: abt 1815, Jacob b: abt 1805, Samuel, Robert and possibly Henry, were the offspring of Samuel Watson and Elizabeth Castle Wharton. There were 2 Jacobs born very close together, in Susannah’s life, one was her uncle b: 1802 m: Catherine Shannon, and her brother Jacob b abt: 1805 m: Nancy Chess..
Early use of the census was spotty. In the 1790 census there was an Alexander Castle In Washington Co., PA, the same county where Robert Wharton lived. I never found him, A. Castle, after that. That same year there were 8 other Castles in the census, 1 in Bucks Co., 6 in Dauphin Co. and 1 in Fayette Co. In 1800 PA census only 1 Castle, in Bucks Co., different from the Bucks 1790 one. In 1810, 3 Castles did the census in PA, 1 Bucks, 1 Mifflin and 1 Wayne Counties. I was never able to find Samuel Watson Wharton d: 1823 nor wife Elizabeth Castle Wharton in a census.
I am told by another correspondent that Susannah and Ira were married by Andrew Wharton. That would be her uncle, b: 1789. He was living in Morgan Co., in 1830. He died in 1833.
Isaac b: abt 1815, m: 6/4/1835, Jane Anderson b: 8/9/1814 in Scotland, d: 1890 Noble Co., OH. In the 1850 census they were together in Morgan Co., OH, with 3 children, Henry, Duncan and Grace. In 1860 Jane and Henry were living with another family in Noble Co., Isaac was gone. In 1880 Jane is living in Noble Co., with 2 Wharton grandchildren, and her status is listed as widowed or divorced. As Isaac d: 1898 and is buried in McConnelsville cemetery, Morgan Co., it must be the latter, divorced.
Ira Hoskins died between the 1860-70 censuses and wife Susannah Wharton Hoskins moved in with her daughter Catherine Lamb in Athens Co., OH. At least, that is where they were at the 1870 census. Also living with them then was Isaac Wharton. Isaac appears to be census shy. I can’t find him in 1860 or 80. In the 1880 census Susannah was living with the Lambs in Hocking Co., OH. She died 9/27/1883 in Ward Twp., Hocking Co., at age 77 years, 7 months. Her death report gave her place of birth as Prussia. Her birthplace was given as PA in the 1850 & 60 censuses, as OH in 1870 and as NY on the 1880 census with both parents listed as born in PA. The last two were probably provided by her daughter, as was that on the death report, all three different.
Regards, Dave
