I believe that you are correct in the basic, social distinction between the brothers; but I do not think that the Rev. James' descendants did too badly. For example, see:

a career somewhat parallel to his 1st cousin, Maj. Edis Armstrong Flewwelling who, amongst other things, was also Mayor of the City of Saint John.

I suspect their ship-building efforts about Clifton Royal were the basis for their advancement, as well as apparently untiring energy.
