Have seen the B??er name spelled both ways, depending on the person writing it and the time. My line is from Christian Bauer, b. 24.Sep.1835 in Wittenberg (Würtemberg?) Germany d. 2.Feb.1918 in Henry County, and Caroline Seafert / Seifert b. 11.Apr.1841 in Medina OH, d. Mar.1925 in Henry County. On 1860 census, name is BOWER; on 1900 census, BAUR; 1920, BOWER. Rest of the time, shown as BAUER. Two of the daughters, Minnie and Eva, married two S(ch)warz brothers from Adams twp, Lucas County -- now part of Toledo. They lived right down the road from my Dad's mother's family. Other daughters that i have info on: Agnes married Samuel Owens, Ida married Albert Coressel, Mary Margaret married John Adam Westrick. Not sure what happened to siblings John F. and Teresa Bauer.
As far as big families, Mom was one of 13 (5 still living). Her mother (Elnora Laubenthal) was one of 10, and her mother (Mara Cotton) was one of 8 from a second marriage; she had at least 5 half-siblings. Mom's father (Walter Sylvester) was one of ONLY 6, and his father (John Adam) one of 7. He farmed in the Hamler area at least to 1916; in 1920, he was listed as a contractor in Napoleon.
Grandpa Westrick's brother Alphonso Christian stayed in Toledo after he got mustered out from WWI, roomed with one of my Dad's aunts when he worked at the Willys plant. His second wife (Mary Jackman) died in 2004, age 95. Grandma Westrick was just shy of 95 when she died, and a great-great-grandmother. Used to be, at the family re-unions, you needed a program to tell who was who -- and that was just Grandma's immediate relatives -- children, nieces and nephews, and their kids, and THEIR kids......
