Your Peterson (b ca 1816 York SC, d 1864 TN) is probably the nephew of mine (b ca 1783 VA, d after 1870 Mecklenburg Co NC). I say "probably" because we only have circumstantial evidence that (NC) Peterson's father was Reeves or Reaves Westmoreland, father of Edmond/Edmund Westmoreland and grandfather of SC Peterson. The Mormon recording of (SC) Peterson as "Peterson Jr" and son of (NC) Peterson and Elizabeth Jolly Westmoreland is certainly mistaken [http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/search/frameset_search.asp?PAGE=ancestorsearchresults.asp].

Unlike Edmund, Peterson is not mentioned as one of Reaves and Susannah Harwell Westmoreland's children in the will of Susannah's father, but it specifically cites names only for adult children, mentioning others as being minors.

Peterson Westmoreland first is named in the 1800 Tax List of Brunswick County VA, Hartwell Tuckers District, St. Andrews Parish (one white male tithe and nothing else) along with an entry for Rieves Westmoreland (one white male tithe, two horses, five Negro tithes, zero Negro tithes 12-16).

Next is his 12/29/1801 Brunswick Co VA marriage with Elizabeth, a marriage which yielded my gggrandfather Jesse among its other fruits. This relationship is corroborated by entries in a family Bible copied by Mormon researcher Lena Westmoreland White in 1960.

He appears in the 1810 Iredell Co NC census (p 257) as one of two males age 26-45, where the other might be his brother Jackson (b ca 1782 VA, d after 1850 MS) or Rhody/Rhoad/Rhodi (b VA, d IL betw 1830-1840). Next he is in an 1814 Iredell muster roll for the War of 1812 and then in the 1815 Iredell County Poll Tax List as "Pelosson". His final entry in Iredell is in the 1820 census, p 249. I think they lived in the Mayhew area of southeastern Iredell County.

In the 1830 census, he is missing, but thereafter he is in Mecklenburg County NC:

1840 (p 341),
1850 ("P. Westmoreland", Hopewell District, Davidson College, p 38; shown explicitly with "Eliza" as ages 70 and 71 respectively and both mistakenly reported as born in NC)
1860 ("Peterson Westmoreland", Western Division, Charlotte P.O., age 80 b VA; no Elizabeth)
1870 ("Peter Westmoreland", Lemley Township, p 162, age 87)

This home site was bought in or about 1828, based in Mecklenburg deeds. It was near the headwaters of McDowell Creek, just west of present-day I-77 and northeast of the intersection of present-day Westmoreland Road and W. Catawba Ave in Cornelius NC.
