In Reply to: James Gardiner/Caroline Westlake, Somerset, Englan by Caroline Nadell of 423

Here is a follow-up of what I have learned about Caroline Westlake and James Gardiner, my great-great grandparents, who were married in Somerton, Somerset County, England, in 1843.

Using films from LDS, I searched the Census of 1841, and found Caroline Westlake living in the home of her parents, Adam Westlake and Harriet ?. They were listed as living on Kirkham Street. Also living in the census were older brother Charles Westlake and younger brother William. Harriet is shown as having been born in Bath, the others in Somerton.

I also found John Westlake living in Somerton with his wife Hester and their rather large family. I am positive that John Westlake is Adam's brother. Also living in John's home was Adam Westlake, age 85, who had to have been the father of John and Adam, and the son of the original William Westlake who was born in Somerset County in the 1700s.

Then I checked the Census of 1851 records, and found Adam Westlake and his wife Harriet again, still living on Kirkham Street, this time with no children, but with grandson Adam Westlake, age 3, and Edith Gardiner, age 5, present in the home. It would seem to me that this Edith Gardiner has to be the daughter of James and Caroline Westlake Gardiner, and thus establishing a definitive link between these two families.

In the Census of 1851, I also found John Westlake and some of his children; his wife Hester was missing, but I believe that she died about 1850. They were still living at Old Hill.

I am now in the process of going through Parish baptism, marriage and death records for Somerton.

Here are some baptism records I found:

May 11, 1817-Jane, daughter of Adam and Harriet Westlake.

May 20, 1820-Charles, son of Adam and Harriet Westlake.

October 10, 1824-Caroline, daugher of Adam and Harriet Westlake. Her birth date was also recorded: August 12, 1822.

October 10, 1824-William, son of Adam and Harriet Westlake. His BD was also recorded: July 20, 1820.

I also found the baptism dates for many, if not all, of John's and Hester's children. Here the names of the children I found: Elias, Caroline, Grace, George, Jane, and Mary Ann. I have both census records and parish records for them.

In the Marriage records, I found these records:

John Westlake and Hester Squire-February 10, 1823.

John Munday and Jane Westlake-October 3, 1835. Jane Munday was a witness at the marriage of James and Caroline Gardiner, and I believe this forms another link in a chain of circumstantial evidence for this family.

I am not through with these films, and will post further when I learn more.

Here are the names and numbers for the microfiche films I used:

Census Returns for Somerton-Somerset-England GB 1841 (#474603)

Census Returns for Somerton-Somerset-England GB 1851 (#221083)

Parish Registers 1697-1906 (#1526731)

I decided to post this information as a favor to others researching this family. I have received so much help that I wanted to return the favor.

Unfortunately, I have not had much luck with the Gardiner side of this marriage, but I'll keep searching.

E-mail me if you would like to ask about other things I found.

Happy Hunting!
