Hi Doc,

TEMPERANCE WEST b. 1790 was a daughter of HEZEKIAH WEST and PRICILLA Prissilla) OSBORN. Scroll to the last part of this response to see the 1844 will of HEZEKIAH WEST. THOMAS M. MERCER was a witness to the will. HEZEKIAH d. July 28, 1845. He is buried at West Eden Cemetery in Johnson Co. Illinois.

I descend from Hezekiah's daughter Sarah "Sally" West b. 1785 in Sandy River, Chester Co. South Carolina and m. Theodoricks "Rix" Carter in Johnson Co. Illinois. Hezekiah and his family lived at West's Eden near Cypress in Johnson Co. Illinois. Hezekiah was b. in Maryland and moved with his parents to Chester Co. SC. Hezekiah married in Chester Co. SC and later moved with his family to Jackson Co. TN, then KY, then Johnson Co. Illinois.

THE HEZEKIAH WEST BIBLE

Correspondence sent to Henry Hebard West and included in his Volume 1:

From Mrs. CORA (WEST) HOOPER, Danville, IL Aug. 1, 1933

"Mrs. SPALDING also has HEZEKIAH WEST'S Bible. She will not let any one, even myself, have it, but she will furnish any dates that are recorded in it to you at any time. I can tell you this much, the dates are not very many, and the writing is faded too. This Bible is rather a funny looking
thing, being about 7 inches wide, 9 inches long and 4 inches thick."

And August 26, 1933

" Well that I know, LYDIA (LYDIA ( WEST) SPALDING) does not have any kind of papers or records of the WEST Family. All she has is the HEZEKIAH WEST Bible, and this is the way she happens to be in possession of it. Mother gave it to JOE (JOSEPH K. WEST) and in 1916 when he got sick and had to lay off from his work and enter the Illinois Central R.R. Hospital at Paducah, he brought his suit case to her home, and opened it and took out the Bible and gave it to her with the request that she keep it always in her possession, which she has done ever since. Where ever she goes, she carries it with her."

And September 12, 1933

"My sister, Mrs. SPALDING has three Bibles in her possession, namely HEZEKIAH WEST, WILLIAM MOBLEY WEST and JOSHUA P. WEST. She has the last two stored among her household goods. The HEZEKIAH WEST Bible, JOE gave to sister in August 1917. He died December 30, 1917."

And May 10, 1934 (after a visit to her sister in Detroit)

"Well, Mr. WEST, there is absolutely nothing in the HEZEKIAH WEST Bible only what you already have. We compared your data with the Bible and it is exactly the same, and there is no other in the Bible. Nothing on the plain unprinted leaves in either the front or the back of the Bible. The Bible is 8 inches wide by 10 inches ling; not a very large one. Bound in rawhide. Looks as if he had done the binding himself as there are large stitches of rawhide thread on either side of the back binding. The s's are all like f's in the print. No date of the printing is anywhere in it. It must have been rebound by him and it must be a real old, old Bible. How we wish it could speak and tell us, but it is a mute evidence of long, long ago. Sister keeps it well wrapped in celophane paper, then in taffeta silk, trying to preserve it."

"Detroit, Mich.
Dec 3, 1934

Mr. H.H. WEST,
Los Angeles, Cal.

Dear Sir;
I am enclosing copy of the records as they are in the book. Hope it is satisfactory. Was delayed on account of my husband being hit by an automobile, Nov. 3, has very badly bruised shoulder and side also broken arm. Not being very well myself the shock of his accident almost made me sick.
As I am not very much interested in old data, maybe the reason I overlooked this, however I hope you get everything as you wish it.

Yours truly,
Mrs. SPALDING"
