Below is an excerpt from the Origin of the Wessel Family - By Dr. Eckard Wessel written in Hamburg, Germany in 1959:

Our family comes originally from the Netherlands and dates back to Hans WESSEL (I,1) who in the middle of the 15th century immigrated to Germany from the Netherlands and who settled in Stralsund. He was a business man and a brewer and he lived in "Bruwhuse in der Langen Strate". His son Pranz (II,2) has played an imminent role as mayor of Stralsund in the development of this town and went into history as someone who paved the way for the reformation. One street still bears his name.
