Dear Mr. Bacon:
Amilia Carwell Werneke was my great grandmother. She was married to Gustave Robert Werneke, my great grandfather on February 10, 1871 in Lincoln County, Missouri.Amilia's father was William Carwell, and her mother was Catherine Schaper. They had three children, one of which was my grandfather, Edwin R. Werneke.Amilia married George Mayer in 1883 after Gustave died in 1882, and then married Benjamin Green in 1885, and had two more children.Amilia was born on October 13, 1851 and died on April 14, 1933.She is buried at the Caldwell cemetery, Caldwell, Kansas.
I have a little information on Amilia's father, William. This information was compiled by a relative of mine, and I will quote it here."William Carwell is more like a ghost to me.He was born in Germany (so the census record states), but the name Carwell does not strike me as being German. His wife Catherine died about 1855 or 1856.William then married a Henrietta Jaspering. She did not like the children of William so she kicked them out of the house. They went to live with a brother of Catherine's.William divorced Henrietta, she then marrried another man and had eight children by him.I wonder how she got along with her own children?I know little else about William except he fought in the Civil War on the side of the South. He died as a P.O.W. in Alton Illinois prison."
I have some war records that indicate where William was captured, etc.
I'm more than willing to send you copies of what I have, and am interested in what your connection to William Carwell is.
Ed Werneke
