I'm quite sure that Jacob Welty is the man. He was in Rowan Co., NC, in deeds there in 1790, then went to northeastern Kentucky. My references are buried right now, but there is a deed in (I think) Bourbon County, Kentucky, from 1794, where he and Rachel sold land. This establishes his wife's name. Then he was in the Drake's Creek area of Simpson County, KY (then Warren Co.), in tax lists from 1800 to 1807, and then disappears. He then went to Cape Girardeau Co., MO, and is found on a tax list there in 1822. Rachel then purchases a Federal land patent in Arkansas (I think in 1830). Most likely Jacob died in the 4 years between filing a claim and his widow's getting the certificate. It's possible that Lawrence Co., Ark. records may have some documentation on him, but I haven't look into that.
There probable son Abraham S. Welty appears on tax lists in Arkansas in the 1830s and would be the right age to have been the father of John, Henry, and their sisters.
