Augsburg: The first man who had this name came from the city of Augsburg in Germany
(Augs = perhaps a derivation of the first name August. Burger = Resident of a village who has there special rights.)
Beer:Interpretation unclear. Possibly the first named carrier looked like a bear or came from French Switzerland as a Pierre.
Bögli: One which buckles like a bend or establishes litle bends, or one who lived at place named little bend.
Duperret: A Perret is a French word for a headgear.
Eschlimann: The first man with this name dealt either with ash or with ash-trees.
Geiger: Musician plays this one the violin (violin=Geige).
The Habegg is a little village near Langnau canton Berne. People who lived ther, were described as Habegger.(Hab=Hawk; egg=long hill, also corner)
Hofstetter: Hofstatt means the groud where the house stands. Hofstetter: This describes the person who lives there.
Imhof: Im= in or at. Hof=Yard or farm.
Ingold: I am not sure. Perhaps In=in or at. Gold=gold. The word gold also could be an abreviation for the old Swissword Goleta what means rockfall area.
Lehmann: So in Switzerland was called a man who had leased a farm.
Luginbühl: Lugi=lie also peeking. Bühl: old Alemannic word for hill.The first Luginbühl lived there.
Moser: Moss. People who lives at a moss are named Moser.
Niederhauser: The first Niederhauser lived in a low house.
Röthlisberger: Röthlisberg is a little hamlet in the berneese Emmental. People who lived there were known as Röthlisberger. (Röthlis=man with red hair. Berg=mountain.)
Schroter: Schrote: a tool to tcut the hay stick. It looks similar like a flat sharpened shovel. The Schroter is the man who does cut hay with a Schrote. Today Schroter is a nickname for a sheriff.
Schuhmacher: shoemaker
Schenk: One which pours somebody a drink.
Stauffer: There are several hamlets in the Emmental named Stauffen. Stauffer's lived ther. Stauffe:Step
Steffen: Steffen is the Swiss word for Stephan.
Suter: This is an old Swiss word for Shoemaker.
Welty (also written as Wälti, Wälthi, Wälti) cames from the first name Walter.
Weutherick. The writting seams to be changed in America. In Switzerland it's written as Wüthrich. A Person who often is furious and correspondingly rages, gets Wührich as nickname.
