Dave,I know you posted your message over 8 years ago but I think the Welsby you were looking for could be my great great grandfather Thomas Welsby who was a wine merchant in Chester.
The third son of Thomas was John Welsby, an Engineer who migrated to New Zealand about 1878.John married Martha Louisa Clere (an 1877 immigrant)in Wellington NZ in 1880. Martha and John were then both aged 28.
Marta and John had 7 children but only one, my Grandmother Ellen Mabel Welsby produced offspring including my mother Elsa.
I have been having trouble locating where John came from exactly so am quite excited to read your old posting. Hoping you get this and get in touch with me.
