I was also wondering about this 1828 date.
It was probably either a fire, a catastrophic accident with a wagon and horses *going over a cliff or into a river?) lightning or war.
I doubt if it was disease as they wouldn't necessarily died the same day. The fact that it was a parent with some children leads me to believe it could have been a fire although I have tried to look up an account of an event on that day in that area but haven't found anything yet.

I have been assembling the Wellwoods for some years now but mostly those in Canada although I do have some scattered throughout the USA.
I would be interested in any material on the USA Wellwoods that you have.
There is also a large group in Australia/New Zealand as well.
