Martha Daughdrill-Wells-Nelson in Polk County, Texas

I’m trying to find more information on Martha Daughdrill-Wells-Nelson.

On the 1850 and 1860 Polk County, Texas census, she was living in the Wyatt Hickman household along with her sister, Mary/Matilda. {Her maiden name has been spelled several different ways, Daughdrill, Dadrill, Dodrill, Dodrell. “Daughdrill” is how it is spelled on the death certificate of her son.} I have assumed that she and her sister were orphans, taken in and raised by Wyatt and his wife, Mary Dickerson Hickman, either when they lived in Newton County, Texas, or after they moved to Polk County, Texas. Martha and her sister might have even been related to Mary Dickerson Hickman. Wyatt Hickman died around 1868 in Coryell County, Texas.

Martha married Marion Wells, sometime before 1870. I haven’t found the marriage records for them yet. I am assuming, but I don’t know for sure that Marion Wells died or they were divorced, and she married someone with the last name of Nelson. She was known as Martha Nelson for years.

She had two children that I am aware of, John William Wells and Mary Wells-St. Orr. There may have been more. She had a grandson, named Walter House who may have worked at the sawmill at Camden in the 1930’s. At one time, she lived, with her family, in Houston County before moving to Polk County. Her son, John William Wells never married and she made her home with him at Hortense, Polk County, Texas until her death, sometime in early 1932.

Martha Nelson is buried beside her son, John William Wells, in Pine Ridge Cemetery, Hortense, Polk County, Texas. I know, according to census records that Martha was born around 1844. My grandmother attended her funeral and believes it was in the early part of 1932.

If anyone can provide a better record of the birth and death dates, along with any marriage dates for Martha, please let me know.
