Hillman 'Buck' Wells, 78, of the Wildcat Valley, Big Stone
Gap, VA, went home to be with the Lord on Thursday,
January 16, 2014, at Holston Valley Medical Center,
Kingsport, Sullivan Co TN, surrounded by his family.
Born September 5, 1935, Buck was a lifelong resident of
Big Stone Gap. He was a retired coal miner with the
Westmoreland Coal Co., with 27 years of service and a
member of the U.M.W.A. District #28.
Buck enjoyed carpentry and built several houses in the area.
He was a member of the 'Blue Crew' at the former Powell
Valley High School, where he enjoyed helping with the
football team each fall. Buck was of Baptist faith.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 45 years, Shirley
Lovell Wells; his parents, Bill and Etta (Rogers) Wells; and
a brother, Harold Carl 'H. C.' Wells.
Surviving are four daughters, Regina Pennington and
husband Kevin, and Kitty Wells, both of Big Stone Gap, VA,
Sandy Wells, of Weber City, VA, and Dawn Porter and
husband Dave, of the home; six grandchildren, Gary and
Aimee Mawk, Danielle and James Ferrell, Joey and Alyssa
Bear, Tomi Owens, K. C. Owens, and Devin Porter; five great
grandchildren, Jovonna and Tanner Mawk, Dakota Lewis,
J. D. Ferrell, and Eli Bear; two brothers, Leroy Wells and wife
Carrie, of Clinchport, VA, and Billy Wells and wife Nina, of
Big Stone Gap, VA; three sisters, Dean Wells and Jean
Swinney, both of Big Stone Gap, VA, and Ruth Caudill, of
Jasper, VA; and several nieces and nephews.
The staff of Holding Funeral Home would like to express our
sincere sympathy to Buck's family. Buck worked at Holding
Funeral Home during his retirement years and his smiling
face and pleasant nature will be missed.
The family will receive friends from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m., on
Monday, January 20, 2014, at Holding Funeral Home,
17 E. 3rd St., N., in Big Stone Gap.
Funeral services will be conducted at 7 p.m., in the funeral
home chapel, with Pastor James Holcomb officiating.
Committal graveside services will be held at 1 p.m., on
Tuesday, January 21, 2014 at the Flores Cemetery, in the
Wildcat Valley of Big Stone Gap, VA. Family and friends will
meet at the funeral home by 12:30 p.m., on Tuesday, to go in
procession to the cemetery. Family and friends will serve as
pallbearers.
