Wellons -- Johnston Co. NC 1870's

In the 1870 census, living in Smithfield, NC are:
Benj. A. Wellons       44
Mary (Wife)              34
David (son)              18
James (son)              16
Lida (daughter)              11
Deliar (daughter) 9
The only marriage record that I can find for Benjamin Wellons is to Sarah Barnes of Wayne Co. about 1850. My guess is that Mary is a second wife.
In the 1880 census, living in Smithfield are:
B. A. Wellons       54
Mary (Wife)       44
Jesse (son)         4
David (son)       28
A monograph, written by a grandnephew of Benjamin Wellons in 1910, lists Benjamin's wife as Sarah and lists his first four children, stating that daughters Lida and Delia died without having children. No mention is made of Jesse, or Jesse's mother Mary.
My grandmother (b. 1900) was daughter of Jesse Holt Wellons. She always said "His grandmother was a Holt from the family that owned Holt's Lake in Smithfield". My g- mother was second of four children (to survive infancy). Her mother (Julia Smith, daughter of Joseph Dallas Smith of Smithfield) died when she was six. Jesse Holt Wellons "moved back to Princeton, married again but died approx three years later".
I think that the body of water that my grandmother referred to could have been "Holt's Pond" near Princeton, Johnston Co. NC.
I am particularly interested in finding out the last name of Mary, wife of Benjamin Wellons. Benjamin and Mary Wellons, and Jesse and Julia Smith Wellons, are buried in Riverside cemetery in Smithfield, NC, here are the dates:
B.A. Wellons b. 9/3/1825 d. 5/21/1905 (h/o Mary)
Mary Wellons b. 11/20/1835 d. 1/14/1907 (w/o B.A.)
Jessie H. Wellons b. 5/5/1876 d. 1/7/1910
Julia B. Smith Wellons b. 11/27/1877 d. 7/13/1906
Does anyone have any information on this line, especially Mary, who may have been related to the Holt family of Johnston Co. NC?
Many thanks, Bruce Henderson
