I would guess a connection to Thomas Welling on Long Island in the 1600's, particularly in Jamaica, Long Island, NY 1673. I am not familiar with the family, and only noted them because of the potential for confusion with Thomas Flewelling in the same area about the same time. Both surnames probably derive from Llewellyn, but as far as I know, there is no relationship.
