I found your post on the Welke Genealogy forum interesting so I thought I'd contact you.
The one thing that you mentioned that peaked my interest was that you said the family came from the east. This is partly true of my family.
I was born in Argentina but live in Canada now and have done research on my family for 2 years.
So far I have traced the family back from South America between 1920 to present, to Kurland (Latvia) between 1914 to 1920, to Volhynia (Russia) between 1870 to 1914. Before that they lived in Poland between late 1700s and 1870 in the area of Petrikau.
My verbal family tradition says that the family originated in Westfalen. I have no proof of this (yet), although I know there is Welke families in the Iserlohn, Westfalen churchbooks in the 1600 and 1700s.
