Sure it did. There is a Weldy family of English origin which was concentrated in Virginia, but others are part of the Welty family. The Mennonite (Bernese Anabaptist) Weltys came from Berne Canton and today spell the name "Wälti." Peter (d. 1755) and his brother Christian came to Pennsylvania in 1727, but they were illiterate. Peter's son John spelled his name, on his will "Hannes Weldy," and the other son, Abraham, seems to have used "Weldy" as well. But most later generations used "Welty." John's son Abraham's son John went to St. Joseph Co., IN, and his descendants spelled it "Weldy." Some of Christian's descendants spell it "Weldy."
