Carol-I will be in and out all this week so maybe wait till Sunday evening (around 4 your time??)
Now, since I don't have my notes handy, do you have a Wm. Whilden that was born about 1815 in NC???The reason I ask is that I did your search of WHILDEN in SC 1860 census and I found about 6 of them.. but shown on information page as all being "white".Hmmm. So I read further on the families listed in Christ Church District.
One of them was W. H. Whilden age 33, farmer, white, along with a Sarah age 30, Robert age 32 and a WILLIAM WHILDEN age 45, laborer, and an "X" marked in the color box--which is the only box so marked within that WHILDEN family. That makes him black or mulatto.
I thought this was an interesting find since we assume your Wilden's / Weldon's/ Whilden's were given the surname of the family they "served"...it turns my stomach to say "were owned by"..but no matter how I state it you know what I mean.
Hope this leads to something new.Not making any progress on my own line so working on yours has been an adventure!
