JAMES LAWRENCE WELBORN
Pioneer Citizen of Jones County Passes to His Reward.
Col. James Lawrence Welborn, eighty-three years of age, died Monday morning at the residence of his son, E. W. Welborn near Mico, after an illness dating from July. Early in July Mr. Welborn was stricken with paralysis. His death was expected at the time, but his remarkable vitality which has been the wonder of all, pulled him through and he was doing fairly will until about six weeks ago when he suffered a second stroke and gradually sank until death came to his relief.
Col. Welborn was born in Jones county eighty-three years ago. In early manhood he married and settled down on the homestead on which he died, preceded by his helpmeet about six years. He raised a family of thirteen children and lived to see them all reach the age of maturity and to become honorable citizens of the commonwealth. Two of his sons have risen to high distinction in National affairs. W. C. Welborn chief of the Bureau of Agriculture in the Philippines and Captain Ira C. Welborn, U. S. A. Taken as a whole no family in the country numbers a more honorable, intelligent and prosperous citizenship, and on the score at his death there was a room for a feeling of pride in the heart of the father. His surviving children are: P. C. Welborn, Stringer, Miss.; Mrs. I. J. Garner, Perkinston, Miss.; Mrs. Crish, Dickerson, Charco, Tex.; M. F. Welborn, Mico, Miss.; E. W. Welborn, Mico, Miss.; Mrs. I. V. Moss, Amy, Miss.; E. B. Welborn, Laurel, Miss.; W. C. Welborn, Manila, P. I.; N. P. Welborn, Laurel, Miss.; Mrs. Cato Curry, Hosey, Miss.; Mrs. Rosa Hardy, Moss, Miss.; Capt. Ira C. Welborn, U. S. A. He had sixty-five grandchildren and fifty-three great-grandchildren at the time of his death.
Col. Welborn served as a youth in the Mexican war and later when the war between the states began, he shouldered his musket in defense of the cause of the South, serving until the war was over. He was well known and well beloved by all who knew him.
The remains were interred Tuesday afternoon at the family cemetery on the old homestead, with Masonic honors. notwithstanding the very inclement weather numerous friends and relatives gathered beside the grave to pay their last sad tribute of respect.
