Dear Holly,
I was not referring to your Edward and these are two different people we are talking about. Our Edward was born much earlier, back in the early 1700's (circa 1730) and most experienced genealogists will tell you that people born around and before the Rev. War did not have middle names. Only in rare cases such as Aristocratic families of Nobility or Royalty were given middle names but even then it was rare. I hope this answers your question and I might add too that just because a descendant with the same first name has a middle name. It does not always mean that their ancestor that has that same first name necessarily had a middle name at all!! If you want to fantasize that they did that's fine with me, but I sure would like seeing it in black and white if it is before those dates mentioned above and going by what was said by an expert on the subject!
