I have heard speculation that the name may refer to "white singers". In the Middle Ages small parish churches did not have their own choirs so hired travelling bands of choristers who wore white smocks. Thus the name. I have no idea whether or not this theory has any merit, but I thought I'd toss it in the ring. Notify Administrator about this message?
