weirs of lakeview
One direct ancestor of mine, Robert Weir left Scotland, 1610, selling his estates, moving to Fermanagh Ireland. He married, in 1613 a sister of Sir David Lyndsay and they lived in Tullymargy Castle. His son Alexander married Anne dau. of Sir John Dunbar. Alexander died 1614. Alexander's son John was murdered during the Irish Wars (1641). A second son, his namesake, Alexander married Sarah dau. of Capt. Goodwin.
One son John, died young; his dau. Anne married David King, Sheriff of Dublin. Another son Robert (b1676) married Anne dau. of Capt Christopher Carleton of Tullymargy Castle. The castle burned to the ground in 1713 and, using the ruins - original bricks etc., Robert built Hall Craig House. Above the doorway, Robert had the inscription : 'Porto Paterns Esto. Rulli Clauda Honesto and Robert and Anne Weir 1721. Little Hall Craig"
One son of Robert & Anne, George, (Rev) left Fermangh and settled in Tawnagh Co. Sligo.
His son Lancelot (b1754) built the family home in Riverstown on the banks of Lough Arrow. The family from that day to now have always been known as The Weirs of Lakeview.
One son of Lancelot, Robert (b1794) married Hannah Phibbs. They had 15 children.
One son, William Ormsby Weir (b1838) married Sara Ruxton, a Catholic. As at this time the family were Protestants, this upset the family greatly. So much so that he was, in a sense, disowned. It is believed that William and Sara received a dispensatio from te Pope to marry and having received it travelled to Boston to get married. (Not yet verified).
His son John, born and raised a Catholic, married Sarah, a Catholic, who it is said was also a cousin, and by now all family connections were definitely severed. John disappeared mysteriously approx 1920. No-one knows where he went, what did he do, etc. One family story is that he left for Scotland, died there and was buried in a pauper's grave; another is that he may hadve abondoned his family, took up house with his wife's sister and may well have lived to a grand old age. As of yet we have very little information about John. John's daughter Sarah Irwin Weir de Vere married John Flood. They had 7 chidren. One daughter Christina married my dad and had me.
These are all just basic pointers. There is so much more that I could tell you about them and other family members. If you can relate to any of them, especially Robert/Anne; William/John please get in touch
Jacqui
