From the Desert Sun - Palm Springs- I have no further information on this person - as a researcher i am simply putting the information into genforum for other researchers use. ********************************************* Eleanore Papp Weiner, who co-founded Leeds & Son in the Coachella Valley more than 60 years ago, died Tuesday in Rancho Mirage. She was 85. Weiner was described by local leaders as a pioneer who helped shape the valley into what it is today, and added to its luster. Leeds & Son Fine Jewelers is one of the oldest and most respected jewelers in the desert. "We are extremely saddened by the loss of our mother," daughter Riki Stein said. "She was an extraordinary woman." Stein said her mother was a role model who touched many lives with her elegance, graciousness and unique ability to make everyone feel special. "Her legacy is being one of many pioneers who were a pivotal force in the valley,'' said Palm Desert Councilman Jim Ferguson. "The Leeds and Son business is very much a staple. Leeds added to the prominence of the city. We'll join her family in missing her tremendously." Born Dec. 3, 1922, in Pittsburgh, Weiner began her career as a buyer and model for Gimbels, a major American department store of that era. After marrying Edward Harold Weiner, the couple moved to Bullhead City, Ariz. While Edward worked as an engineer on the Davis Dam, Eleanore managed her first jewelry and variety store. In 1947, the Weiners moved to the Coachella Valley and opened Leeds Jewelers in downtown Indio. As Edward ran the business, Eleanore became the "face" of the store. She excelled in customer service. She was also a huge Los Angeles Lakers fan who rarely missed a game. At one point, the couple owned six stores in Yuma, El Centro, Indio, Blythe, Barstow and Palm Springs. Leeds & Son Jewelers on El Paseo, which celebrated a $5 million makeover in 2006, today is operated by son Terry Weiner and daughter Riki, with grandson Brett Stein as a senior account executive. "My mother was beautiful and sophisticated but also a courageous and strong woman," said Terry Weiner. A celebration of life is scheduled for 2 p.m. Friday at La Spiga Ristorante, 72-557 Highway 111, Palm Desert. Eleanore was preceded in death by her husband. Survivors include two daughters, Wendy Shaw and Riki Stein; son Terry; four grandchildren; two great grandchildren; and one brother, Elmer Papp. Memorials are suggested to the Los Angeles Lakers Youth Foundation.
