Just came back from Wegman Family Reuniton.Would like to share "Wegman Family History" that appeared in newletter at the reunion:
As far as we know our family was started in Wangen, Switzerland, this area is now a ski resort. This is where it all began with Henry Wegman, who came to the United States of America arriving in Texas. He worked for five years as a mail carrier, saved his money and returned to Switzerland. To the best of our knowledge he was shanghaied and robbed of a great deal of money. When he arrived home he was penniless.
Henry was married in 1862 to Maria Winkler.Together they had three children, Adolph, Emma and Henry, Jr.
Henry Jr. came to America at the young age of 18.He was accompained by his aunt, Madeline Brewald. When he arrived in Randolph County, West Virginia he found work on a farm in Huttonsville. While he was working he met a man named Claude Rader.Claude taught Henry, Jr. how to speak English. While he was still working he was deeded 100 acres of timber land at Becky's Creek.
In 1882, Henry Jr. was married to Mary Ann McCauley. They lived on the Middle Fork River where they had four children, French, Emma (who died an infant), William and Polly.
After thirteen years in the US, Henry Jr. and Mary Ann were divorced.Henry then returned to Switzerland where he later met and married Fannie Backmann. They lived in Dietlikon and Wangan. They had five children there, they were, Adolph, Ernest, Fannie, Conrad, and Walter.
After that they came back to the US and had two more children, Warner and Mary.
Around this time Henry Sr. Became very ill and passed away.Henry Jr. and his brother Adolph had a misunderstanding over their fathers homestead.Henry Jr. sold his share and never saw his brother again.During this time Henry made plands to return to America. He and hsi family made their way back on the Saint Paul sail ship by way of France to England and on to New York.
From New York they made it to Mill Creek, West Virginia, which at that time was called "Little Switzerland".During the rest of his life he and his fmaily lived throughout the Mill Creek area and Huttonsville.
Henry Wegman Jr passed away in 1930.
