CLARA WINCHESTER DANA
CLARA WINCHESTER DANA, my mother, was born at Troy, N. Y., on June 24, 1842. The earliest picture of her is a diaguerreotype taken when she was three years old, shortly after an epidemic of scarlet fever had swept through the city of Troy to which her only brother had succumed, and which had threatened her own life. In the picture Mother is standing between her parents. Her face is hearshaped, her eyes large and rather wistful and her hair drawn back tightly from her forehead. He has a deep dimple in her chin. Her full gathered skirt is quite long and her patalettes are a tier of narrow ruffles coming down to her one strap slippers. It is a quaint, charming picture. Later photographs show her face remained slim, with a high regular forehead, straight nose and beautiful mouth. Her eyes were a deep violet blue, her hair brown, and she had dimples in her cheeks as well as the dep one in her chin. She was of mediium height with a good figure, an erect carriage, and quick step.
Of her earliest education little is know, but in 1855 she entered the Troy Femal Seminary, now the Emma Willard School, where she remained for five years. She did not ghraduate form there, however, but transferred to "Maplewood", a boarding school at Pittsfield, Mass., where she finished her education.
Mother was the possessor of a clear, pure soprano voice whose lovely quality remained until her death at the age of fifty-two years. She had inherited from her father, James Dana, and from her grandfather, Stephen Winchester Dana, a great love for and appreciation of music, and her training in voice and on the piano was the best afforded at Troy and at her boarding school.
She was naturally cheerful and happy, with a delightful sense of humor. Like her father she was a good story teller and mimic and she had that rare charm which attracted people of all types and ages to her. She never offended by unkind criticisms, and held her friends as readily as she won their confidence.
Mother and Father were married at the Weed home, 40 Fourth Street, Troy, N. Y., on August 11, 1864. As her grandfather, Alsop Weed, had died the preceding March, the wedding was a quiet one. After a short honeymoon, the young couple went West, and the ten years of their married life wre spent, first in Morris, Grundy County, Ill., and later in Champaign, Ill., where Father had successive pastorates. During that time five children were born to them. The eldest, name for his grndfather James Dana, died very suddenly of cholera-infantum at the age of nine months, while Mother and he were visiting relatives in Bennington, Vt., This was a great sorrow to Mother and Father as "Jamie" had been a beautiful and seemingly bealthy baby. He is buried at Oakwood Cemetery, Troy, N. Y.
