Patricia:
Below is what I found on Benedict Webber back in the 1980s when I was reseaching the Webber of Vermont. - Kurt W. Webber
Benedict Webber of Shrewsbury, Rutland County. The Vermont Census, taken in 1791, lists a Benedict Webber with two males 16 and over, two males under 16, and three females living in Shrewsbury, Rutland County. The Shrewsbury town history by Dawn D. Hance, page 300 lists the following about Benedict Webber family..
William Webber probably died in N.H. prior to 1778 when his son, Benedict, asked the town of Marlboro, N.H. to support William's widow, Rebecca. In 1780 Benedict moved his household including his mother, Rebecca, to the Goepel property on a side road off Town Hill Road in Shrewsbury. In early years the road from the Center Meeting House passed by the cemetery by Webbers', and met the present Town Hill Road (near French's).
Rebecca died April 9, 1782 from burns received from falling into a fireplace. This was the first death recorded in Shrewsbury and possibly she was burned on the Goepel property.William and Rebecca's son Benedict had a wife Hannah (b. ca. 1732 June 22, 1807 Sh. in her 75th yr.).
In 1789 Benedict sold his property to his son William, who later transferred it to his son, Constant.
POSSIBLY children of Benedict and Hannah:
1) Hannah Webber Dec. 24, 1759 Oct. 24, 1851 Sh., m. Nov. 19, 1775 Richmond, N.H. Ziba Aldrich.
2) William ca. 1766 July 1849 Sh., m. Hannah Barney (1764 May 2, 1858, ae 93 yrs. 8 mos. 5 ds.), dau. of Constant and Hannah (Carpenter) of Richmond, N.H. and sister of Jeffrey Amherst Barney, an early Sh. settler.[it then lists info on three children]
3) Benedict, Jr. ca. 1779 May 10, 1808 Sh., ae 29 yrs., m. Oct. 19, 1806 Abigail Low.
4) Rebecca m. Apr. 5, 1775 Richmond, N.H., Solomon Aldrich (b. Dec. 18, 1753).Children:Hannah, Mary, Aaron.They were listed on the 1790 Shrewsbury census.
Prentiss Glazier page 63, states that “Benedict Webber married Hannah Evans at Attleborough, Mass., 1754; there they had Rebecca 1755, Hannah 1757, Sarah 1760, Mello (daughter) 1765 and William 1767.They were at Shrewsbury, Vermont when the 1790 (1791) census. This Benedict appears in Boston Vital Records, born 1733, son of William and Rebecca (Thomas).”
On August 21, 1998, Dawn D. Hance, the author of the Shrewsbury history was contacted by telephone. In preparing her history, Ms. Hance checked deeds, probates and vital records and found no reference to additional children.Further, Benedict Webber was not listed in the 1771 census and apparently was not living in Vermont when our Lewis was born. Therefore, it was determined that Benedict Webber was not the father of our Lewis Webber.
During the conversation Ms. Hance was asked it she thought if Benedict’s family might have been Dutch. She said there were no Dutch settlements in Rutland County and a Dutch family would not have settled with the English.Ms. Hance was asked about the possibility of people from Western Vermont and the Hudson River immigrating to Maine and she said “No, that there were those who went to Maine from Eastern Vermont, Connecticut and New Hampshire but not from Western Vermont.” .It is noted, however, that Benedict Webber settled in Western Vermont from Marlboro, N.H. and it would seem immigrants from New Hampshire could return via the same migration route.
