I thought it was interesting, too, Kurt. I wonder how many variations on the so-called "Webber inheritance" were circulating during the early 20th century.

I have a letter written by my ggg-grandfather, William Ami Webber, to one of his daughters in 1914 that shows another (humorous) take on the story.

He wrote: "My paternal ancestors were of Holland or Dutch descent. The Webbers came to New York previous to the revolutionary war. The three brothers served in the revolutionary war." [Where he got this info from I'm not sure, but I suspect he or his granddaughter, after being led to believe they could inherit part of a huge estate, paid a phony genealogy research company to trace the family's early roots in America].

He goes on to say [now this is the really funny part]: "The sister Sarah married Anake Jahnes [sic], who owned the land where Trinity and St. Paul's churches now stand, on Broadway in New York City. This property is now valued at more than two hundred and fifty million dollars."

Whoa! Obviously old William didn't know that Anneke was a woman.

Unfortunately, because of the phony genealogy "record" that circulated through our family (William had 8 children and apparently provided each with a copy), there's a lot of misinformation about my Webber line on the Internet, and it's been hard to separate fact from fiction.
