So sorry to hear of your loss. I too lost my father some years ago. Being the oldest of three sons and the only one interested in family history has helped me. But I found that there still isnt a day that goes by when thinking of him that I still think of: "I should have asked him about?" Time heals the pain and your mother now needs the kind of support she gave to you when you were a child. I'm currently looking after my mom (84yrs). And we often reflect on the years gone by.
I did find that as the oldest child I often placed upon myself brudens both emotional and physical that really were not mine. Death like life is a natural part of our life.
Rejoice in moments of remembrance and be thankful that he is at rest.
