Notes for FRANKLIN DAVIS WEATHERILL:
Franklin Davis Wetherill's Father, Asa was paid by another man to serve in his place in the navy, a practice which was allowed at that time. He became ill and died aboard the hospital ship "The Western Metropolis" , and it is believed that he was buried at sea. Franklins mother Elizabeth found it difficult to make a living and she had Franklin admitted to the Orangeville Soldiers Orphans school on March 20,1867. Due to the closing of the Orangeville school, he was transferred to Hartford School in Susquehanna County, Pa. on May 30,1868.
The Hartford school was formerly the Hartford University established in 1817. It covered 125 Acres and was purchased by the Superintendent of Soldiers Orphans for a Soldiers Orphans school. There were 174 orphans at the school. Boys were taught chores and farm work. Industrious habits were formed and a degree of skill acquired which enabled them to secure positions at the age of sixteen. Lessons of common and higher education, as well as music and foreign languages were taught.
For a time Franklin Davis worked in the bakery and the dairy there. He was discharged from the school on his sixteenth birthday, June 25, 1870.
His sister Sarah Wetherill, born February 25, 1857 was also admitted to the Hartford School on October 19th,1868 and was discharged February 25, 1873.
Their address after being discharged was Sereno,Pa.
